Apple has announced the official launch of its long-awaited payment service, Apple Pay, in India. This rollout is the result of a strategic partnership with Axis Bank, enabling iPhone users in India to make contactless payments using their Apple devices.
This announcement marks the official introduction of Apple Pay to the Indian market. Users can now add Axis Bank-issued cards to the Wallet app on their iPhone for in-store and online purchases. In addition to supporting India's unique digital payment infrastructure, UPI, this integration enhances convenience as an international payment method.
India is a market with exceptionally high penetration of digital payments, anchored by UPI. While Apple had previously held off on deploying its payment features in the region, this partnership aims to integrate the iPhone brand value with a seamless payment experience, thereby strengthening user retention within its local ecosystem.
Moving forward, further expansion of partner banks and the rollout of features tailored to local payment needs are anticipated. All eyes are on how Apple will establish its presence in one of the world's largest payment markets.
